No other mobile phone manufacturer has taken the risky step of introducing a mobile phone with the same model number of a previous one to try to tap into the retro fashion that seems to be the thing of the moment.
It is risky for a number of reasons, obviously the number one reason would be confusion on the consumers behalf, even though the original model is no longer available to buy, a quick search on Google reveals thousands of pages relating to the model. The original 6500 was still available around four years ago and so there are still lots of websites featuring relevant pages full of reviews of the specifications and features of the phone, an unwitting customer could easily stumble across these pages and conclude that it must be the model everyone is talking about.
The fact is though, the new Nokia 6500 Classic does retain a large amount of the original models style and elegance, the main casing is manufactured from anodised stainless steel giving the handset a sense of expense whilst the overall dimension for the depth of the handset makes it officially the slimmest Nokia mobile phone available on the UK market to date, measuring a mere 9.5mm.
These small dimensions are also reflected in the weight, at just 94g making the Nokia 6500 an extremely ergonomic and compact device.
The introduction of a second model in the classic range is only set to confuse even more as the manufacturer have now released the Nokia 6500 slide, this new phone does not share many of the pronounced features of the Classic but instead offers some upgraded software and a new sliding design, the main screen is simply pushed upwards to reveal the handsets keypad which automatically activates the device.
Both handsets are 3G enabled and utilise a secondary VGA camera on the front of the handset to facilitate face to face video calling where as the two communicators can see and hear each other. 3G services are also available to both phones with fast download speeds for streaming media and access to news and sports headlines, new movie trailers and pre-release music videos.
The Nokia 6500 Slide offers a better camera than the 6500 Classic with 3.2 versus 2.0 megapixels, both offer a flash for low light level photography, digital zoom for close up picture capture and support for video recording and playback.
Both models also features an onboard MP3 player that can be uploaded with music tracks from a PC using a Micro USB cable or downloaded direct from the mobile internet over 3G before being organised into user created playlists to suit mood, tempo and genre.
Other common features include an integrated FM Radio with RDS which can display the radio station name as well as artist and track information, this feature can also be useful for keeping up to date with local weather reports and traffic news.
The Nokia 6500 Slide is slightly heavier and deeper than the Classic to accommodate for the extra technology and of course the sliding mechanism but overall both handsets offer a choice of design to suit the individual preference.
